US History 7th Grade

Welcome Letter

Posted: September 7, 2017

Dear Parents,
I would like to welcome you all to the 2017-2018 school year! This year I will continue
to provide academic experiences for my students that are rigorous and relevant, while
continuing to build our social and emotional experiences with our P.R.I.D. E. values. As
your child’s Social Studies teacher, it is important to me that everyone who steps into
my classroom is excited to be here! This attitude enables me to meet the challenges of
academic excellence in a positive, fun, and nurturing environment.
I am committed to working tirelessly to provide challenging educational opportunities
for your child each day. But to be successful on my quest, I need your help. You are a
special and unique part of Hernandez Middle School. Collaboration about your child is a
main ingredient to a healthy and successful year. Open communication is vital to ensure
a successful home-school partnership throughout the year. Parent involvement is an
important aspect of your child’s education and is the primary factor in your child’s
success in school. I ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by monitoring
their progress and ensuring that he/she:
 Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience
 Completes all homework and assignments
 Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of what is happening
here at school
 Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject
 Knows that you have high standards for their learning and expect him/her to
succeed in school
7th grade Social Studies is an exciting year! I am sure all students are aware that this
year they will be learning all about our great country and taking the US and Illinois State
Constitution exam. This is an important test, as all students must pass in order to
graduate 8th grade. Your child will engage in the learning of American History; the trade
routes and early settlers of our country, the events that led to the Revolutionary War,
and the writing of the Constitution. We will also discuss current events. I am looking
forward to a great year!

Absences & Late Work
I am setting high expectations this year and expect students to take ownership and
responsibility for their learning. There will be no accepting any late work unless a
student is absent- this includes students leaving assignments in their locker. Students
must be prepared for class and will not be allowed to return to their lockers. If your
child is absent, it is their responsibility to make up work. They have one day to see me
for any make up work before it is considered late, and I will not be asking students for
their assignment.
